From 16 January to 28 February 2025, SCOTTY in Berlin presents the exhibition “I can not believe it.” featuring works by Manja Ebert and Sabrina Labis. Bringing together two artistic positions, the exhibition reflects on the creation, circulation, and re-contextualisation of digital images and the narratives they generate within social networks. The exhibition is part of the official Vorspiel programme of transmediale 2026.

At the core of the exhibition are artistic practices based on collecting, organising, and recombining found footage. Both artists investigate digital image cultures at the intersection of technology, networked communication, and perception, examining their broader social and media-related implications.

In Brubble, Manja Ebert presents a sculptural video and light installation that translates invisible data flows and background processes of social networks into a tangible spatial experience. The work addresses resource consumption and the dynamics of a content culture driven by constant production, circulation, and instrumentalisation of images. In OBEY, Ebert engraves screenshots from platforms such as TikTok into smartphone displays, confronting them with paradoxical calls to action. The work reflects on the interchangeability of content and the ongoing fusion of information, advertising, fake news, and AI-generated imagery within digital environments.

Sabrina Labis’s video installation Weird Stars is based on a long-term collection of amateur YouTube videos in which non-professionals attempt to document supposedly unusual celestial phenomena while narrating their interpretations off-screen. Labis weaves these fragments into her own constellation, creating a space in which perception, truth, and imagination intersect with the formation of conspiracy myths and fake news. In Weird Certificates, she extends this investigation by purchasing a star online for each video and presenting the corresponding certificates. These documents retrospectively assign an absurd form of credibility to the recordings and reveal how facts can be performatively produced within digitally networked systems.
