The Friedrichswerder Church is the only surviving church building by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in Berlin’s city center whose facade and interior still correspond to their original appearance. Since 2020, the Friedrichswerder Church’s permanent exhibition has featured major works of sculpture from the long 19th century, drawn from the National Gallery’s collection. These include Johann Gottfried Schadow’s original plaster model of the Princesses Group, works by his fellow sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch, as well as dynamic Neo-Baroque sculptures by Karl Begas and sculptures by the German Romans Adolf Brütt and Adolf von Hildebrand.

The exhibition space on the gallery of the church is dedicated to the work and life of the Prussian universal artist and builder of the Friedrichswerder Church, Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

New admission prices will apply from 4 March 2026. The regular price will then be 6 EUR, with concessions at 3 EUR. Visitors under the age of 18 will continue to enjoy free admission.

In addition to a free accompanying brochure, a newly designed audio walk provides detailed information about the works on display. The audio walk can be listened to via the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche app, which is available in the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android). A detailed education and outreach programme is also offered at the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche.

The Friedrichswerder Church was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built between 1824 and 1830 – almost simultaneously with his Old Museum. Upon completion, the church was used by the German and French congregations of the Evangelical Church in Prussia. Severe damage during World War II necessitated extensive restoration work between 1979 and 1986. It reopened and was first used as a museum church in 1987 to mark Berlin’s 750th anniversary. Since 2012, the church building could only be viewed from the outside, as the construction of new buildings in the immediate vicinity had caused significant damage, requiring extensive repairs and restoration, which were recently completed. In 2020, a new permanent exhibition featuring sculptures and other works from the collection of the Old National Gallery opened.
