48 Stunden Neukölln announces annual theme 2022

Editors’ Choice

The art festival 48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN will take place from 24 to 26 June 2022 in the district of Berlin-Neukölln. The theme for the year has now been announced. Applications for artistic participation in Berlin’s largest independent art festival are possible from 15 December 2021 until 2 February 2022.

After lively discussions, the decision committee chose a Turkish idiom as the festival theme for the next edition from over 100 submitted proposals. The decision was preceded by a workshop with actors from the fields of art, culture, science, architecture, drama, design and art education, mostly from Neukölln.

The 2022 festival theme is “Kafayı yemek / I eat my head”. Kafayı yemek is one of the most used phrases in the Turkish language. Literally translated, it means “to eat one’s head” and can be used as a strong, unexpected reaction to dramatic moments, or as a way of questioning the moment. The usage is varied and the idiom can be conjugated in both singular and plural:

I’m so bored, kafayı yicem! (I’m going to eat my head!)

Kafayı yicem, the sea looks beautiful today! (I’m going to eat my head!)

There is a lot to do, take a break or kafayı yicen! (You will eat your head!)

Kafayı yicez, they are always like this. We can’t take it anymore! (We will eat our head!)

The curators Canberk Akçal and Elif Yıldırım have written an explanatory text on the festival theme, which can be found on the 48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN website: To the text.

Registration and application for the festival: anmeldung.48-stunden-neukoelln.de. Application deadline for festival entries: 2 February 2022.

The 48 HOURS OF NEW COLOGNE team and festival management are available for discussions on project ideas and proposals and will be happy to advise on questions regarding implementation, finding space and necessary permits as well as on applying for funding:

48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN is a forum for artistic projects from all sectors of the Berlin art scene. The festival presents and promotes art that contributes to the discussion of current social issues and reflects on them. Since its founding in 1999, 48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN has established itself as Berlin’s largest independent art festival with its exemplary character. The artistic works created here act as impulses far beyond Berlin-Neukölln, take a stand on issues affecting society as a whole and promote a lasting exchange with the international art scene.

The Department of Culture of Neukölln supports the festival through its own funding of artists who develop a contribution especially for this festival (information on the department’s arts funding can be found at berlin.de/kunst-und-kultur-neukoelln/foerderung/kunstfoerderung-48-h-neukoelln/, Application deadline: 14 January 2022).
