They promise a brilliant start to autumn: Numerous galleries throughout the city, in Berlin’s Wilhelm Hallen as well as at the Positions Berlin fair on the grounds of Tempelhof Airport are part of Berlin Art Week.

Berlin Art Week. Art happens here. Every year in September: exhibitions and mediation offers, projects and performances, screenings, talks and many encounters under the sign of art. For 5 days, major players on the scene present a diverse festival programme of contemporary art. Museums and institutions, galleries in the city and at the fair, private collections and project spaces: they all make an appearance. Art experts and friends, artists and curators, Berliners and their guests from all over the world. They all celebrate art. Because in Berlin, art is not only made, it is lived.
The galleries are an essential part of Berlin’s art scene: internationally active and spread throughout the city, they are a permanent fixture of Berlin Art Week. During the festival week, over 50 galleries offer extended opening hours. The fair Positions Berlin Art Fair is also a must – in 2022 it will invite its guests to the Tempelhof Airport grounds for the ninth time as part of Berlin Art Week. In addition to the well-known Berlin galleries, 88 galleries from 20 countries will present themselves here.
POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair
What began more than 10 years ago as a meeting place for art lovers and dealers has established itself in recent years as a fixed programme highlight in the autumn season opener and the Berlin Art Week. Today, Positions Berlin Art Fair is an important player in the national and international art fair landscape, bringing together committed and new collectors with galleries and their emerging artists’ positions and works. From 15-18 SEP 2022 Positions Berlin Art Fair will once again take place in Hangar 5-6 of the former Tempelhof Airport, welcoming the creative scene and bringing the capital’s art market into focus.
With 88 galleries from 20 countries, Positions Berlin presents visitors with a comprehensive field of participants. Young talents such as Marta Djourina, Shinoh Nam and Yannick Ackah will be shown alongside established greats of art history such as Eduard Bargheer, Vera Molnar, Lotte Laserstein and Paul McCarthy. A diverse supporting programme complements the lively fair.
Exhibitions in the Berlin Galleries for Berlin Art Week
As a city of art, Berlin is above all a lively production site – numerous renowned and up-and-coming artists live and work in the capital. A dynamic network of galleries creates a stage for them and presents their works to the public.
From 15th to 18th September 2022 an association of 53 Berlin galleries will be presenting artistic works that set trends in Berlin and the world every day between 12 and 6 pm. Among them are established positions by artists such as Rosa Barba at Esther Schipper, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Jon Rafman at Sprüth Magers and Carrie Mae Weems at Galerie Barbara Thumm. In addition, numerous young artists living and working in Berlin will be shown, such as Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg at Efremidis, Philipp Modersohn at Guido W. Baudach and Mario Pfeiffer at KOW.
In some cases, the opening hours will even be extended! All participating galleries and their artists can be found here.
Hallen #3 Wilhelm Hallen
For the third time during Berlin Art Week, the listed Wilhelm Hallen in Reinickendorf will be the focus of the freely curated group exhibition ‘Reinickendorf Rules’. 15 renowned Berlin galleries have joined forces for this exhibition: These include alexander levy, carlier | gebauer, ChertLüdde, Efremidis Gallery, Esther Schipper, Helga-Maria Klosterfelde, HUA International, Klemm’s, Mehdi Chouakri, neugerriemschneider, Nome, PSM, Soy Capitán, Sprüth Magers and Sweetwater. The participating galleries of the K60 initiative are keen to further promote dialogue and discussion between the galleries and the Berlin art scene and to create space for the development of new ideas and the sharing of resources.
VBKI-Preis Berliner Galerien
The shortlist for the VBKI Prize Berlin Galleries 2022 makes one eagerly await the presentations of the nominees. The Berlin galleries Galerie Thomas Fischer with Sebastian Stumpf, Office Impart with Anna Ehrenstein and Soy Capitán with Caroline Wong are in the running for the sixth gallery prize. Prizes will be awarded for a special exhibition project organised during the Berlin Art Week as well as for the overall presentation. On 16 September, after viewing the three exhibitions, the jury of experts will award the prize of 10,000 euros to one of the three nominees.
