LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur Münster: Rotbart and the rest of the world – Barbarossa. The Art of Rule | until 05.02.2023

During the autumn holidays, the LWL Museum of Art and Culture in Münster is offering two workshops for children. The different offers thematically take up the exhibition “Barbarossa. The Art of Rule” (until 5.2.23) and will take place in parallel at both the LWL Museum of Art and Culture and at Cappenberg Castle in Selm. The workshops will have different focuses. Each workshop lasts four days and costs 40 euros. On the four days, the children meet from 11 am to 3 pm.

At the workshop “Drawing from the Whole – Medieval Writing Workshop” from Tuesday (4.10.) to Friday (7.10.), six- to ten-year-old children will travel back to the Middle Ages and try out artistic techniques of book production. Everything from making their own paper to bookbinding and fine painting is included. Participants learn the art of writing with broad quill and ink and experiment with vegetable dyes.

At “Rotbart und der Rest der Welt – Comic Workshop” from Tuesday (11.10.) to Friday (14.10.), children aged eight to twelve will learn to create their own comic. Fame, splendour and glory – the life of Emperor Barbarossa sounds heroic. But what makes a hero or heroine? In this workshop, participants will question heroes and heroines and develop their own comic characters. With a storyboard and the appropriate character design, the children tell the story in the comic book.

The exhibition “Barbarossa. The Art of Domination” is being shown at two locations to mark the 900th anniversary of the birth of the famous Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. At Cappenberg Castle, visitors can learn about the connection between the historical site and Barbarossa. From 28 October, the exhibition at the LWL Museum of Art and Culture will illuminate the traces of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in what is now North Rhine-Westphalia. The focus is on a precious bronze head, long mistaken for a portrait of Barbarossa, and a gilded hand-washing bowl with a depiction of his baptism by Otto von Cappenberg.
