Manifesta 16 Ruhr is the 16th edition of the European nomadic biennial for contemporary art. It will take place from June 21 to October 4, 2026, in various cities in the Ruhr region. The biennial focuses on the social and urban transformation of post-industrial spaces and explores how art and culture can act as catalysts for social change and civic engagement.
Special features:
Manifesta 16 Ruhr focuses on the conversion of former church buildings into cultural centers. This transformation is seen as part of an urban research approach aimed at strengthening social cohesion in the region. Urban mediator Josep Bohigas is leading this process.
Target audience:
The biennial is aimed at a broad audience, including art lovers, local residents, professionals from the art and culture scene, and international visitors. There is a particular focus on involving local communities through citizen participation and participatory projects.
History:
Manifesta was founded in Rotterdam in 1996 and takes place every two years in a different European city or region. The 2026 edition in the Ruhr region is the first Manifesta in the Ruhr region and follows Manifesta 15 in Barcelona.
