Editors’ Choice

The Staatsballett Berlin will premiere STRAVINSKY on 10 June 2023, an evening of ballet presenting two recent key works in the history of dance and music theatre by innovator Igor Stravinsky, performed by the Staatskapelle Berlin. DAS FRÜHLINGSOPFER by Pina Bausch and PETRUSCHKA by Marco Goecke bring together works by two choreographers of different generations.

In the last premiere of the season, the Staatsballett Berlin will stage the double STRAVINSKY at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden on 10 June 2023. Two more recent productions of THE RITE OF SPRING and PETRUSHKA shed a different light on these iconic works, which provoked outrage at the time of their creation and changed music history forever. The Staatskapelle Berlin will perform under the musical direction of Giuseppe Mentuccia.

For the first time, the company will dance a work by the legendary choreographer Pina Bausch in a co-production with the Pina Bausch Foundation. THE RITE OF SPRING was created in 1975 and was her last, in the narrower sense, fully choreographed work. She adheres closely to the libretto, however, bringing the heathen ritual to the here and now. Stage and costumes by Rolf Borzik are removed from time and place of the events and lend the piece a sensual presence. The peat-covered stage requires the dancers to go to their physical limits. They have to dance, as Pina Bausch conceived it, for their lives.

PETRUSHKA is now part of the Berlin repertoire in Marco Goecke’s version (created in 2016 for the Ballett Zürich). The focus is on the eponymous puppet theatre figure of Petrushka. The central character of the Russian balagan, the fairground theatre, thematises being an outsider in this production. In addition, there is a play of confusion: What is just an act here and what is real? Alexandre Cagnat will take the stage as Petrushka and David Soares as Rival as well as Alizée Sicre as Ballerina and Federico Spallitta as Charlatan.
