Berlin Art Week 2023: André Vida — The Breathless Saxophone – Yellow Solo | 14.09. + 15.09.2023

Editors’ Choice

André Vida’s performance The Breathless Saxophone at Yellow Solo is based on the idea of playing a saxophone without breath, leaving out the most important form of expression and control in order to make the saxophonic apparatus sound. This restriction allows us to discover the sound of gestures that the saxophone itself hears internally during each solo. The instrument is an extension of the performer’s body, so that when the breath is omitted, the percussive inner life of the saxophone dominates. Through the expanded bell of the breathless saxophone, we hear a naturally amplified version of this percussive, sometimes elusive music.

If we imagine listening to a solo in this way, we would discover a fascinating and unintentional succession of short-lived harmonics overlapping the patterns of the fingers. This musical result is a continuation of the rhythmic approach in John Cage’s works for prepared piano, as it completely silences the actual expectations of the sounding of a musical gesture and replaces it with an alternative mood and sound reality.
