Yoshitomo Nara is one of the most famous artists of his generation, and his imposing paintings of children with big heads and big eyes – sometimes menacing, defiant and cheeky, but also melancholy and insecure – are widely recognised.

Nara’s characters, figures and animals are a reflection of himself: Memories of his childhood, his life experiences, his knowledge of music, art and society, both in Japan and abroad, are the source of his creativity.
The recurring themes in his work – such as the house with the red roof, the rungs, the puddle, the box, the blue boat and the forest – show the continuity of his thinking throughout his career and illustrate his stylistic development.
Nara’s first major solo exhibition in a leading European museum has been specially conceived for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It will then travel to Baden-Baden and London, where the exhibition will be redesigned for each location.
