Editors’ Choice

Immanuel Kant defines the sublime as the feeling of consternation in the face of the greatness of nature, which at the same time confronts us with our own smallness and finiteness. What value and what role can the Kantian sense of the sublime still play in the age of the Anthropocene?

In the works in the SUBLIMINALIA exhibition, climate change takes on the role of a “hyperobject” that transcends the limits of human understanding and gives us an impressive idea of the magnitude of nature.

The works on display, for example sculpture, installation and photography, analyze the geological changes and relate them to the Kantian concept and the contemporary Nietzschean view as >will to power<. The approach to the feeling of the sublime is seen as a possible way out and change of direction: It leads us back to our human finitude by acting as a way out of an anthropocentric view.

SUBLIMINALIA challenges us to question the traditional separation between human and animal, organic and inorganic. The concept of metamorphosis as a fundamental aspect of our self-perception and existence leads to the realization that overcoming the challenges of climate change also requires a transformation of our own perspectives.

ARTISTS: Ornella Orlandini | Francesco Petruccelli | Jessica Rimondi

About Ornella Orlandini

Ornella Orlandini studied educational science at the University of Turin (IT) with a dissertation in anthropology. She is currently studying and practicing shamanism. She is a photographer and focuses her artistic research on themes related to the development of the self in relation to the environment and nature. Her research is related to self-knowledge and female consciousness, while using a performative method: She combines theoretical research with practical exploration and experience. Her photographic works are the result of her artistic process, which also includes intimate performances and self-portraits. She is currently working on a trilogy about consciousness from a female perspective, exploring possible ways for a renewed harmonious relationship with nature.

About Francesco Petruccelli

Francesco Petruccelli, an Italian artist based in Berlin, worked for years as a cameraman and studied humanities in Milan. In 2010 he moved to Berlin, where he studied Fine Arts at the UdK. He has been exhibiting his works in Germany and abroad since 2013. For him, vandalism and iconoclasm are paradoxical ways of finding new meanings. The process of destruction that his artworks must undergo can reveal hidden identities, connections to aspects of the soul that can only become visible through a violation of the epidermis of individuality.

His artistic research aims to challenge a notion of history as progress towards higher cultural values. He often uses materials related to garbage to create an analogy between the supposedly highest human cultural achievements and the lowest state of objects 3 that of garbage 3. In the end, the cultural significance of things can only lie in their skin.

ASERET

ASERET is a Berlin-based composer and live performer. He is the founder of “Farewell”, a cultural event that took place for the first time in July 2022 in an old factory in East Berlin. ASERET’s music is characterized by contemplative drones as a foundation on which sound textures, arpeggios or sequences are finely layered. Synthesizers, pedals and software create immersive listening experiences. The aim of his works is to bring the human value of each person back to the fore and, through music, to give them the opportunity to recognize themselves and rethink their own timeless spaces in contrast to an increasingly hectic world.

MENION

MENION is a project by guitarist, producer and composer Stefano Ferrari. He graduated in Classical Guitar and Music and New Technologies at the Italian Conservatory and combines visionary electronics with glitch, ambient and post-rock influences in his music. The sound concept is based on the processing of the guitar sound to achieve a transformation of the identity of the sound source through analog and digital instruments. His discography includes the production of two EPs and three albums. He lives and works between Germany and Sardinia.
