SomoS Art Space presents the opening of “Schattenland”, the first solo exhibition of emerging painter and occasional printmaker Teresa Supico outside her native Portugal. The exhibition features her latest series of paintings, which she conceived and executed during her artist residency in Berlin. The exhibition begins on August 24 and ends on August 29, 2024.

Teresa Supico’s work, informed by Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow – the unconscious aspects of the self that are often pushed into the background – brings to light the complex interplay between the visible and the hidden, the conscious and the repressed. Berlin, with its cultural permissiveness and stark contrast to Supico’s rather conservative Portuguese home, serves as the ideal backdrop for this exploration. The unique atmosphere of the city, in which shadows of all kinds find expression, has strongly influenced the works presented in “Schattenland”.
In the exhibition, Supico invites the viewer into a dreamlike universe in which abstract backgrounds reveal hidden figures. She mixes playfulness with profound exploration – much like Hayao Miyazaki, whose films she adores, subtly interweaving serious themes with whimsical characters. Supico paints on fluffy synthetic felt rather than canvas and uses her beloved monotype technique – sponge and foam cut-outs covered in acrylic.
In “Shadowland”, these experimental paintings will be on display alongside Supico’s drawings and larger works on unconventional materials such as carpeting. The exhibition promises to be a captivating exploration of the subconscious, brought to life through Supico’s unique artistic language.
The opening party for “Shadowland” will take place on August 23, 2024 from 6 to 9 pm at SomoS Art Space. We invite you to experience Teresa Supico’s captivating journey into Shadowland with us.
