At today’s press event, the organizers of Kulturprojekte Berlin, together with Joe Chialo, Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion, and other guests, presented the extensive celebrations for the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 8 and 9 November in detail. In addition to historical banners, a four-kilometre-long open-air installation will show the posters designed by thousands of Berliners since June in a large-scale overall experience. An exhibition created in cooperation with numerous experts from memorial sites, foundations and academia puts the demands of the Peaceful Revolution into context. The celebrations will also be accompanied by numerous events such as lectures, guided tours and performances.
The highlight of the two-day program is the rousing “Concert for Freedom” on the evening of 9 November: around 700 musicians will play eight legendary rock anthems along the former Wall – including “Heroes” by David Bowie, “S.O.S” by Silly and “Freiheit” by Marius Müller-Westernhagen. With huge video screens, spectacular lighting effects and thousands of loudspeakers along the kilometer-long route, the evening becomes a unique goosebump moment that transforms Berlin into the biggest rock band in the world.
Joe Chialo, Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion, emphasizes the togetherness during the celebrations: “Social cohesion is indispensable for freedom, only cohesion preserves freedom for all of us. We want to send this strong signal from Berlin to the world with the celebrations to mark 35 years since the fall of the Wall. Because our city is the city of freedom. And the Peaceful Revolution played a decisive role in this.”
On the weekend of the festival, visitors can pick up a comprehensive book publication, which also contains the thousands of posters designed, free of charge, while seven exhibition areas along the installation offer exciting insights into the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Wall in 1989. The Campus of Democracy will conclude on November 10 with the “Revolution! – and then?” and an open-air concert by Pussy Riot.
