Light breezes, fast gusts, roaring storms – from 28. March 2025, the new exhibition at the Diözesanmuseum Paderborn will be all about the wind. Centuries-old works of art from the museum’s collection will be combined with contemporary art: sculptures, videos, music and sound stations by the artist duo Baumann-Brieske (Bern/Berlin) will bring the natural phenomenon with its timeless cycles of becoming and passing to life in the exhibition. Whether as a natural resource or a threat, warm or icy, beneficial or annoying – wind is becoming increasingly important in today’s society.

“Before The Wind”, curated by Christiane Ruhmann, is both an exhibition and a multi-layered performance. A large audiovisual production by the artists in September (20.9/21.9.2025) is a highlight of the programme – with live video, voice, live electronics and choir, specially conceived for the special architecture of the Diözesanmuseum Paderborn with its ascending levels.

The girls’ choir from Paderborn Cathedral will be taking part, with singer and sound artist Franziska Baumann composing vocal material for them, which will be developed together with choirmaster Patrick Cellnik. Together with Baumann’s immersive vocal artistry, the high girls’ voices enter into a relationship with the female figures of the sirens and the sound of the wind. The result is a concertante experience in which the musical performance is combined with Claudia Brieske’s video art.

The artists Claudia Brieske (media artist and video scenographer) from Berlin and Franziska Baumann (voice artist and composer) from Bern (CH) have been developing voice productions with virtual image spaces since 2007. Their work is presented on stages and in indoor and outdoor spaces.
