Walter Benjamin developed his famous theses on the philosophy of history “On the Concept of History” in 1939/40 by translating into language a watercolour drawing by Paul Klee “Angelus novus” (created in 1920, today Israel Museum, Jerusalem). Benjamin wrote these theses and his translation of the “Angel of History” in exile in France, fleeing persecution by the National Socialists.

Based on Walter Benjamin’s power of language, Aura Rosenberg translates the motifs of his “IX. History Thesis” into the pictorial. She condenses past and present into images of struggle and destruction that show visitors how our cultural history is continually shaped by acts of violence and social tensions. The works evoke associations with the far-reaching conflicts of the present. Rosenberg points to the fundamental danger to cultural values posed by armed conflicts or disruptive developments. With the hanging “Black Noise” and two photo collages on “Angel of History”, she interprets Benjamin’s work in many ways.

Aura Rosenberg (born 1949) lives and works in New York City and Berlin. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and Hunter College. Her exhibitions can be seen worldwide, including at Galeria Studio, Warsaw (2017), JOAN, Los Angeles (2016), Galerie Efremidis, Berlin (2021) or Casa Sao Roque, Centro de Arte, Porto (2021). In addition, she publishes photography books, teaches at the Pratt Institute and

at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Aura Rosenberg is a member of the bands The Cornichons and Dirty Mirrors.
