The Akademie der Künste (Hanseatenweg) invites you to the 3. Berliner Begegnung (3rd Berlin Encounter) on 3 December 2022, a discussion format entitled “Thoughts on Time.” The current political, cultural, economic and social upheavals – not to mention the climate crisis and pandemic – are occupying the Akademie der Künste. Uncertainties are increasing, connections are often difficult to recognise. On the occasion of their general meeting, Academy members and their guests publicly discuss their thoughts and questions about the times.

A public, discursive format is planned on the current debates, catastrophes and the multitude of wars and conflicts worldwide and in Europe. The aim is to talk to and listen to each other without prejudice, to address and endure opposites and contradictions. The encounter should create and practice trust among each other.
Peter Ablinger, Jürgen Böttcher, Daniela Dahn, Friedrich Dieckmann, Olga Fedyanina, Christian Grashof, Ulrike Lorenz, Bjørn Melhus, Steffen Mensching, Helke Sander, Gustav Seibt, Iris ter Schiphorst, Kathrin Schmidt, Ingo Schulze, Klaus Staeck, Aleš Šteger, Martin Steyer, Michael Succow, Manos Tsangaris, Andres Veiel, Jutta Wachowiak and others have confirmed their participation and contributions so far.
In this way, the Akademie der Künste is following up on the “Berlin Encounters for Peace Promotion” in the early 1980s. In 1981, on the initiative of the essayist and poet Stephan Hermlin, around 100 writers, artists and academics from both German states as well as from other European countries met at the Academy of Arts of the GDR to discuss the threat to peace in East and West. In 1983, the 2nd Berlin Encounter took place on the West Berlin side, initiated by members of the Literature Department of the Academy of Arts, including Günter Grass, Walter Höllerer and Uwe Johnson.
The 3rd Berlin Encounter was initiated by Academy members Thomas Heise and Helke Misselwitz (Director of the Film and Media Art Section) and Nele Hertling (Director of the Performing Arts Section).
